Here’s one of my fav’s from the session. So hard to choose!!

Can’t wait to get these guys in front of the lens and have some fun!

1. Everyone wants to look great in their headshot, obviously. When you’re coming into the studio to have your images done, make sure you’re feeling good about yourself. Make sure your hair is looking just how you want it. If you’re hiring your own makeup artist, make sure you hire one that will do an awesome job and not make it look like you’re hiding behind a mountain of make up. If you need to go and shred at the gym for a while before you get your headshot done, then do it if it makes you feel good about yourself! Don’t hit the tanning salon and get crispy-fried before coming into the studio, or other silly stuff like that. Remember though, there are things we just can’t change about ourselves, and everybody knows EXACTLY what they can’t stand about themselves. Try and forget about it. Accept the things you can’t change, and it will go a long way to getting that awesome headshot. Remember, what you see in the mirror and what the rest of world sees when they look at your headshot are two very different things; trust me. Your photographer will (and should) know exactly how to work with you to make your headshots flattering and amazing.

2. Find a good photographer. Check out headshot photographers in your area and choose one who’s style you digg. I have a particular style and look to my headshots that is consistent, and whatever photographer you choose should have a consistent style as well so that you know what you’re gonna get when you shoot with them. Make sure you LIKE your photographer. Make sure you mesh with them and can get along well with them, and feel confident that they can work with you to get an awesome headshot. Too many photographers try to sell themselves to clients by letting you know that they shoot with the BEST camera and the BEST lighting. News flash*** – lighting and cameras have NOTHING to do with getting a good headshot. It’s all about your expression, and what the photographer is able to pull out of you. It’s about the connection you make with the camera; lighting and “gear” should only enhance that.

3. Be coachable. If you are coachable and allow the photographer to work with you to get that awesome headshot, you won’t be disappointed. A good photographer knows how to interact with you and is able to pull expressions out of you that make you look interesting, confident, and approachable in your headshot. Coachable = good headshots, good headshots = getting booked, getting booked = money

4. Wear what you love! IF YOU DON’T LIKE HOW YOU LOOK IN AN OUTFIT THAN DON’T BRING IT TO THE STUDIO!!! If you don’t like an outfit, you won’t shoot well in it. I like to give everybody a range of looks when they come into my studio, which is why my sessions last several hours. From a commercial or business look all the way to a sexier look and everything in between – so bring a bunch of outfits that you digg and love to wear and we’ll choose the best ones to give you the range we’re after.

5. Play. Don’t come into the studio thinking that you have to nail the headshot in the first 5 minutes. It doesn’t work like that. You have to crawl before you can walk, and walk before you can run. Be prepared to get it wrong I don’t put a limit on how many images I take during a session, and no decent headshot photographer should. Be prepared to make ridiculous faces. Be prepared to laugh. Be prepared to have some crazy images. When you are willing to play and mess around, you’ll get loosened up and pretty soon you’ll be nailing amazing headshot images left, right, and center.

Yesterday we had the very lovely Tracey Tremblay from Mountain Park Real Estate come by the studio for a session. She needed to update her head shot images, so we did a nice range of images for her. She rocked it – it was so hard to choose my favorite images from the session. Thankfully she gets to choose her favorite image from the gallery we set up for her; I’d never be able to pick just one
